January 30, 2008 - The Adirondack North Country Association hosted its Annual Meeting — Profiles in Partnership and Luncheon in December 2007 at the Hilton Lake Placid Resort in Lake Placid, NY. The Keynote Speaker was Dan Gundersen, Chairman, Upstate Empire State Development.

ANCA Board President Ron Ofner opened the morning session and welcomed the meeting audience. He introduced Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward who pledged her support to work for broadband access. Ron Ofner introduced Jamie Rogers, Mayor of the Village of Lake Placid, who said the North Country region was blessed by nature, but the key assets are the people. He commended ANCA and said keep up the great work. Ron Ofner then introduced Shirley Seney, Supervisor of the Town of North Elba. She said it had been a great experience working with ANCA over the years especially on the Lake Placid/Saranac Lake Pathway Project. She said ANCA is a backbone for the North Country and that the North Country Region is fortunate to have a group like ANCA dedicated to its needs.

ANCA Executive Director, Terry Martino welcomed everyone to the 53rd ANCA Annual Meeting. She opened the meeting by discussing the Adirondack North Country Association: 2007 in Perspective. She showed how ANCA’s Strategic Action Agenda enables ANCA to work as an advocate and a provider of services and programs in the following six areas: Enterprise and Economic Development; Quality of Life; Culture and Tourism; Working Landscapes; Capacity Development; and Regions and Subregions.

After her presentation, Martino introduced a panel of five representatives from companies and organizations with whom ANCA is now partnering. Discussion topics and speakers included: Black River Byway Planning: Byways = Buyway presented by David Zembiec, Director of Community Development, NYS Tug Hill Commission; North Country Woody Biomass Project: Tools For New Energy Production, presented by Sloane Crawford, Program Leader, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation; CBN Connect: Improved Cellular and Broadband Services, presented by Howard Lowe, Director of Economic Development, Technical Assistance Center; Northern Forest Economic Development Strategy: Regional Planning, presented by Lani Ulrich in the absence of Joe Short, Project Manager, Northern Forest Center. Following the luncheon, Senator Betty Little said she was proud to see the room full of so many people committed to the future of the region. She emphasized that teamwork has improved the region’s quality of life and said she was pleased with the efforts ANCA. She congratulated ANCA on fifty-three years of community service. Terry Martino then introduced Chairman Dan Gundersen.

Chairman Gundersen said major issues in the North Country included the widely recognized need for affordable broadband Internet and cell phone coverage. Chairman Gundersen’s discussion on New York State’s commitment to economic development in terms of investment, infrastructure, intellectual capital, international and innovation was reassuring and indicated the level of concern the current administration has for the North Country. In closing, Chairman Gundersen reinforced the commitment of the New York State Department of Economic Development towards the communities and residents of the Adirondack North Country and stressed how local communities would benefit from the competitive edge of modern technology.
