Adirondack North Country Association sponsors Ways of the Woods visit to Saranac Lake

Saranac Lake - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has announced its sponsorship of a visit to Saranac Lake High School later this week by Ways of the Woods: People and the Land in the Northern Forest—the Northern Forest Center’s mobile museum about forest heritage and culture across northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The exhibition will be open to students at Saranac Lake High School on June 4-5. From there, it will travel to Paul Smith’s College for the annual Alumni Reunion on June 7, then on to Madrid the following week for a visit to local schools and the 26th annual Antique Gas & Steam Engine Exhibition on June 14-15.

"ANCA welcomes the chance to sponsor Ways of the Woods and its visit to Saranac Lake High School," said ANCA Executive Director Terry Martino. "This is a valuable opportunity to highlight the importance of our forest-based heritage, culture and resources to North Country communities."

"This is a tremendous opportunity for students at Saranac Lake," said Don Jones, the teacher organizing the visit. "Ways of the Woods offers a wide range of educational opportunities from history to current environmental issues. I’m sure we will all walk away with a clearer understanding of our environment and our role in it."

More than 45,000 people in 45 Northern Forest communities have toured Ways of the Woods since its launch in summer 2006. The traveling exhibition combines multi-media displays housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer with interactive outdoor displays, artifacts and children’s activities to explore the ever-changing relationships between people and land across the Northern Forest.

"Ways of the Woods was designed to help people appreciate the past, understand the present and plan for the future in one of America’s most important and rapidly changing forest regions," said Northern Forest Center Senior Program Director Mike Wilson."Support from local partners like the Adirondack North Country Association is vital to our ability to share this exhibit with local schools and communities across the Northern Forest."

Known as the "museum on wheels," Ways of the Woods has proven itself as a powerful tool for teaching students about the history and culture of their local communities and the Northern Forest. One principal described her school’s experience this way: "As educators, we are always looking for ’real life’ connections to learning that will enhance learning for the students. This program certainly helped to achieve that goal."

Student responses to the exhibit have been characterized by comments like "Wow! It’s like a museum only better," and "This stuff is so interesting. Yay history!"

The Northern Forest Center created Ways of the Woods through collaboration with the Adirondack Museum and scores of heritage organizations across the Northern Forest, and with major financial support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In addition to its school visits this spring, Ways of the Woods will visit 20 fairs and festivals across the four-state region through the summer and fall.

The complete 2008 Tour schedule and updates are available at www.northernforest.org. Any school or organization interested in hosting Ways of the Woods in 2009 should contact Tour Manager Carolyn Graney at 207-824-8263, cgraney(at)northernforest.org.

The Northern Forest Center is a non-profit organization that mobilizes people to build healthy communities, economies and ecosystems by working together across the Northern Forest region.
