Summit helps distill issues around digital currency mining

What is cryptocurrency and how is it affecting the region? How can our communities best address the challenges and opportunities posed by the growth of crypto mining in northern New York?

On June 5th, ANCA hosted a Cryptocurrency Summit with our partners at SUNY Plattsburgh and NY Senator Betty Little's office to address these questions and more.

Interconnection: large-scale solar

Workshop creates connections

ANCA's June 10th workshop and forum - Interconnection: Local Planning and Review for Large Scale Solar - drew over 70 people representing 23 municipalities and 9 counties.

Event partners - Franklin County IDA and the Town of Plattsburgh - helped prepare and carry out this timely conversation about the development of large-scale solar in the region.

Highlights from the meeting: 1) a panel presentation by local officials that provided examples and best practices for solar planning and public projects, and 2) a discussion with solar developers that shed light on the economics and other issues associated with large-scale solar.

ANCA's 3rd annual Bike the Barns - a fully-supported, one-day, farm-by-bike event - offers riders four different route options to suit rider preferences (approximately 13, 25, 45 and 75 miles). The event features seven farm stops where riders can engage with the farmers whose hard work feeds our communities.

Brewing up community investment

Want to be part of the coffee revolution in Saranac Lake? Origin Coffee Co. is the latest small business to use Ignite!, ANCA's crowdfunding platform, to support a project that will help grow its business and community impact. Origin's investment campaign: a new mobile espresso cart to help the 3-year-old company meet a growing demand for delicious, locally brewed coffee.

St. Lawrence County awarded $250K through CEC program

St. Lawrence County has been awarded $250,000 as part of NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities (CEC) program to fund projects that reduce energy consumption for county residents, businesses and communities.

Each Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) has four awards available for municipalities with populations over 40,000, and St. Lawrence is the first North Country county to receive one of the larger grants.

ANCA can assist other qualifying counties in the region to identify and complete action items required by the program. Contact ANCA’s Clean Energy Communities Coordinator Jamie Rogers at jrogers@adirondack.org.

Expanding reach for local foods

Hub on the Hill is on the move

Closing out a $10K Transporting Healthy Food Grant from the Conservation Fund and CSX, The Hub on the Hill in Essex, NY completed its refrigerated truck project earlier this Spring. The delivery van transports perishable products like fresh produce, dairy and meat products as well as value-added products, keeping them cool with a solar-powered refrigeration unit. The truck is already making three delivery routes - northern and southern loops in the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks, as well as a route to New York City.

Farm to School grant updates

Three 2017 Farmer/Producer Mini Grant recipients are using their awards to help streamline the local farm to school food supply chain.

Birdsfoot Farm and Fullers Farm in Canton have begun their projects to install washing and sanitizing equipment for fresh produce. Martin's Farmstand in Potsdam has been using their new food processor to slice root vegetables for school consumption. Martin's has also recently installed a new freezer, which is now up and running.

The next generation of artists

Kudos to local artist, long-time ANCA member and Adirondack Buyer Days show vendor Sandra Young for her leadership on a coloring book project with Brushton-Moira Central School students.

The project, funded by a grant from the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, is an inspiring way to extend the creative arts to our kids and our communities.

This annual forum addresses issues that affect the communities, institutions, people and environment of Adirondack Park. Stakeholder citizens come together to foster communication, seek collaborative solutions, set the stage for constructive action, develop shared vision and strategies and communicate with one voice.

ANCA Annual Meeting
