HARVEST OF THE MONTH

New York's Harvest of the Month is a Farm to School initiative that promotes a different locally grown food in the school cafeteria each month. A toolkit, posters and recipes are available to highlight the Harvest of the Month campaign and thirteen products that New York State schools are serving in their cafeterias. If you're concerned that your students are unfamiliar with local foods and may not prefer to eat seasonally, this program is proven to increase diversity and consumption of local foods by featuring a local food in cafeteria tastings, classroom lessons, and school meals.

Some suggestions for northern NY include:

January- Cabbage

February- Dairy/Yogurt, Pea shoots (school grown), Winter Squash

March- Beef, Onions/Garlic, Mushrooms

April- Potato, Beet
