ELIZABETHTOWN | Jay Ward came to the Essex County Supervisors meeting to talk about business transition and wound up talking about the price of two-by-fours.
Ward Lumber, with stores in Jay and Malone, became the first employee-owned co-op in the North Country this year, which helps guarantee the viability of a business that has been in the family for four generations.
The model could have meaningful implications for other Adirondack businesses, whose founders are ready to step aside but don’t want to see their life’s work to be liquidated or fall into the hands of an aggregator that does not share their community values.
