The director of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative, Nicky Hylton-Patterson, stepped down last week. Over nearly three years, Hylton-Patterson hosted forums on race and equity, founded a program to bring more students of color to the park, and initiated diversity training for police officers. She says living and working in a predominately white, conservative region was difficult at times, but ultimately rewarding.
