Ahead of Ronald Reagan’s landslide victory in 1980, he summed up his candidacy by asking voters, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” James Carville, the architect of Bill Clinton’s breakthrough campaign in 1992, put it this way: “It’s the economy, stupid.” And now, in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s win, many commentators are citing the economy – and inflation in particular – for driving disenchantment with the Democratic Party.
Of course, politicians have relatively little power over the trajectory of the economy. Job growth is largely driven by entrepreneurs and business leaders in the private sector, while downturns are often fueled by forces outside of the government’s control. City & State’s inaugural Trailblazers in Economic Development puts a spotlight on 100 New Yorkers who are on the front lines, creating jobs and spurring economic growth at the local, state and national level.
